Blowhole Beach, South Australia: Kangaroos, dolphins & swimming

Blowhole Beach on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula is a good place to see kangaroos and dolphins. Expect a 2km walk from the Cobbler Hill car park in Deep Creek National Park and hazardous swimming, however.

What is Blowhole Beach?

Blowhole Beach is a 200 metre-long beach in Deep Creek National Park on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula. It is one of the lesser-visited Fleurieu Peninsula beaches, partly because it’s hard to access and partly because it’s further away from the main population centres.

Where is Blowhole Beach, South Australia?

Blowhole Beach is at the western end of Deep Creek National Park, on the Fleurieu Peninsula’s south coast. It is fairly close to Cape Jervis, where the Kangaroo Island ferry leaves from. It isn’t too much of a detour off the Adelaide to Cape Jervis drive.

Getting to Blowhole Beach requires a bit of work, however. If you’ve got a 4WD vehicle, you can take the bumpy, steep track down to the Blowhole Beach car park.

Otherwise, you’ll need to pull over at the Cobbler Hill car park and walk for 2km to reach Blowhole Beach.

Is it safe to swim at Blowhole Beach, Fleurieu Peninsula?

Blowhole Beach is one of those beaches that is best looked at rather than swam at. Swimming at Blowhole Beach is hazardous, with rocky headlands at either end, often sizable swells and a viciously strong rip that can easily pull swimmers out to sea.

However, there is another good reason to visit Blowhole Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula – kangaroos. This is one of the few beaches in Australia where you can reliably see kangaroos. They’re usually in the vegetated dunes behind the sand rather than on the beach itself.

There’s also a good chance of seeing dolphins just offshore at Blowhole Beach.
