Lady Musgrave HQ: Underwater accommodation on the Great Barrier Reef

Lady Musgrave HQ: Underwater accommodation on the Great Barrier Reef

Underwater accommodation on the Great Barrier Reef is possible at Lady Musgrave HQ, a pontoon moored off Lady Musgrave Island. Prices include catamaran transfers from Bundaberg.

It has long been possible to stay on the Great Barrier Reef. There are several reef islands with accommodation, and there’s also the option of a liveaboard yacht.

But the new Lady Musgrave HQ in Queensland takes things to a different level – underwater accommodation on the Great Barrier Reef.

Measuring 35 metres by 12 metres, Lady Musgrave HQ is a three level pontoon moored in the Lady Musgrave Island Lagoon. There are independent snorkel and dive platforms, while high speed dive boats and the Reef Empress catamaran can easily glide up alongside.

Much of Lady Musgrave HQ is set up for day visitors, who can enjoy the diving, snorkelling and glass bottom boat tours. There’s also an underwater observatory, where visitors can observe the corals and marine life.

Find your ideal Great Barrier Reef tours by location

Great Barrier Reef tours run from numerous destinations along the Queensland coast. Different tours cater to different tastes – some make sure they go to the best snorkelling spots, others build in beach time and some throw in extra such as underwater observatories and glass bottom boat tours.

However, there is also underwater accommodation available at Lady Musgrave HQ. It’s not exactly luxurious – this is bunk-style accommodation as it would be on a live-aboard yacht. Up to 20 people can sleep underwater on the Great Barrier Reef, but this option is only bookable by groups.

The other accommodation option at Lady Musgrave HQ isn’t exactly underwater, but you can go glamping on top of the pontoon. The glamping beds come with phenomenal views out over the island and reefs.

Lady Musgrave HQ prices

Pricing is complicated – it’s best to check via the Lady Musgrave Experience website. But don’t expect to stay on the Reef on the cheap. The standard price for one of the glamping beds is $1,250 for two nights.

Other things to do near Bundaberg include watching turtles at Mon Repos Beach, gorging on fruit at the Tinaberries strawberry farm and tasting rum at the Bundaberg Rum distillery.
