Bundaberg Rum: Is it any good and can I do a Bundaberg Distillery tour?

Bundaberg Rum is Australia’s most popular rum, and Bundaberg Distillery tours in Bundaberg, Queensland, show how it is made. Rum tastings are available at the end of the tour.

Bundaberg Rum is Australia’s favourite home-grown rum, and it is phenomenally successful Down Under. While much of the world defaults to Bacardi, in Australia, rum generally means Bundy. It’s rare to ask for a rum and coke at a bar – people will generally ask for a Bundy and Coke.

Taste of Bundaberg Rum

Bundaberg Rum is not too bad either. It’s a fairly dark, fairly strong sweet-tasting rum. It’s hardly a firewater, but it’s not at the same level as, say, Appleton’s or Mount Gay. Some Australians give Bundy rum an unfairly bad reputation. It’s not amazing, and you wouldn’t choose it as a neat, sipping rum, but Bundaberg Rum does mix well – especially with Coca-Cola. It’s not a coincidence that bottle shops such as Thirsty Camel, BSW and Liquorland sell Bundy and cola premixes in cans.

The Bundaberg Distillery tour takes in the molasses well, which holds five million litres of molasses. You then move on to the fermentation tanks, and learn about the double distillation process.

The penultimate stop on the Bundaberg Distillery tour is the Barrel House, where the rum is aged and matured.
