Tannum Sands near Gladstone is about as far north as you’re going to get surf in Queensland. From then on, the Great Barrier Reef kicks in and protects the Australian mainland from the big swells.

It’s by no means the best beach town in Queensland, but Tannum Sands accommodation is worth considering for a night or two if you’re driving up the east coast. This is particularly the case if you’ve got a caravan or campervan, as the forest-surrounded Tannum Sands caravan park is less than a kilometre from the beach.

The Tannum Sands caravan park is officially Discovery Parks – Tannum Sands. Discovery Parks runs a chain of holiday parks around Australia, and they tend to be amongst the best for facilities and quality.

Discovery Parks – Tannum Sands offers barbecue facilities, a tennis court, a pool, an on-site store and WiFi. There’s also a bewildering array of accommodation to choose from. At the very basic end of the Tannum Sands camping experience are unpowered sites for tents. These cost from $32 per night.

There are also powered sites for from $42 and en-suite powered sites for from $55. But as with other such joints in Australia, such as Quobba Station in Western Australia, the Goolwa caravan park in South Australia, there are some more comfortable options should you not fancy the Tannum Sands camping experience.

The Tannum Sands caravan park has a series of cabins, costing from $140 per night for a one bedroom cabin. These cabins come with queen beds, kitchenettes, en-suite showers and toilets. Crockery and cutlery are provided, as are starter kits of tea, coffee and sugar. The separate lounge/ dining area of this Tannum Sands accommodation has ceiling fans, and there is a balcony outside.

Discovery Parks – Tannum Sands is best used as a base for a night or two’s beach break on your way up or down the east coast. But fishing fans are in luck, too – the notoriously well-stocked Lake Awoonga is a short drive away. Sites and cabins can be booked online.
