When you refer to ‘the Bridge’ in Australia, you almost certainly mean the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And justifiably so. It’s a beautiful piece of engineering in a magnificent location spanning Sydney Harbour.

The BridgeClimb has turned Sydney Harbour Bridge into even more of an icon – but it’s not the only bridge climbing operation in Australia.

In Brisbane, the Story Bridge Adventure Climb does much the same job as the BridgeClimb in Sydney or Adelaide Oval Roofclimb in the South Australian capital. The operators are at pains to state they’re not connected, however.

To climb the Story Bridge in Brisbane, you first need kitting out in a special jumpsuit and harness. The harness is then attached by a clip to a safety cable that runs the full distance of the walk. Guests travel along the Story Bridge structure for about a kilometre to a platform 80m above the Brisbane River.

6 supreme Brisbane day trips that will improve your holiday

The views from the top are predictably splendid. The Story Bridge connects rock-climbing hotspot Kangaroo Point with Brisbane CBD and Fortitude Valley. But there are 360 degree views of the city from the top.

To the north are the Glasshouse Mountains on the Sunshine Coast. To the east is Moreton Bay, and its big sand islands. Look south, and there’s the Lamington National Park. And, to the west, there’s Mt Cooth-tha.

Optional extras on the Story Bridge Adventure Climb

The key thing that makes the Story Bridge Adventure Climb a bit different is the adventure part. There are several add-ons you can choose to make the whole thing a bit more of an adrenalin experience. These include the cantilever lean-out, where you lean forwards 80m above the river, hoping the clip and harness will stop you falling.

There’s also the walk the plank – where you teeter on a pirate ship-esque plank above the bridge. The third thrill option is the climb and abseil, where you shimmy down a rope most of the way back down to the start.

How much does the Brisbane bridge climb cost?

At the time of writing, the price of the Story Bridge Adventure Climb is from $137.60. Timed tickets should be booked online in advance.
