Nindigully Pub: Where is Queensland’s oldest hotel?

The Nindigully Pub in the south Queensland outback claims to be the oldest pub in Queensland. It’s a classic outback pub for a cold beer and massive steak. Or the infamous Nindigully Pub burger.

The Nindigully Pub in southern Queensland boast that it is Queensland’s oldest hotel. This is, to put it mildly, a dubious claim, and is caveated. It’s “Queensland’s oldest hotel located in its original condition and position”.

What we do know is that the Nindigully Pub has its license issued in 1864. The former shearer’s accommodation for the Nindigully Station became a changeover station for the Cobb and Co coach service, back in the day when coaches had horses rather than wheels and engines.

These days, ‘the Gully’ is a classic outback pub. It’s in Nindigully, a tiny settlement in the Shire of Balonne. This is close to the New South Wales border in southern Queensland. It’s 236km south of Roma and 195km north-east of Moree. The pub is just off the Carnarvon Highway, slightly south of the junction with the Barwon Highway.

The Nindigully Pub is an unashamedly unpolished place on the banks of the Moonie River. People go there to drink lots of cold beer, and eat lots of meat. Book in advance at the oldest pub in Queensland and you can tackle a kilogram T-bone steak or a gigantic Road Train Burger, which feeds four people.

The Nindigully Pub also offers accommodation. It’s fairly basic, but the pub rooms are comfortable enough for most people. Campers, however, can get free accommodation at this Queensland outback pub.

Caravans and campers can set up in front of the pub on the banks of the Moonie River, using the public showers and toilets free of charge. The pub asks campers to clean up after themselves, however.
