Bodega Underground: Melbourne mezcal bar

This taste of Mexico in Melbourne does offer an ample tequila list, but the focus is very much on mezcal. Tequila is technically a type of mezcal – it’s made from a specific type of agave. But mezcal covers a much bigger range of flavours, although it tends to get pigeonholed as a smokier version of tequila.

Bodega Underground on Little Bourke Street serves up plenty of smoky mezcals, but it does offer a much wider range than that. You’ll find 70-odd different bottles stacked up behind the bar.

Several of them go very nicely into cocktails. This Mexican bar’s cocktail list includes a Turbo Paloma, with grapefruit soda, lime and habanero salt, plus a Mezcal Negroni.

Bodega Underground food menu

Bodega Underground also serves food. The $55 set menu goes through several dishes, including the likes of cauliflower al pastór and lamb ribs with tamarind. But most people will munch their way through a few tacos. There are fish, pork, sweet potato and zucchini taco options, with quesadillas and Mexican fried chicken elsewhere on the menu.

One notable aspect of this Melbourne Mexican restaurant is that all the dishes are gluten-free. It’s also very friendly towards vegetarians and vegans, with several vegan options on the menu.
