Fonda Mexican in Australia is a restaurant chain. At present, you’ll find outlets in Melbourne and Sydney.

The Fonda Mexican story started in 2010, when two friends set off on a street food sampling trip around Mexico. They came back and decided to create a Mexican restaurant in Australia that showed off the best aspects of what they found in Mexico.

Mexican food in Australia traditionally isn’t all that good, so there was a clear gap in the market for something fresh and new. Soon enough the first Fonda Mexican on Swan Street in Melbourne was a massive hit, with hour-long queues outside.

That original restaurant at 248 Swan Street in Richmond has been joined by eight others. In Melbourne CBD, you can find a Fonda Mexican on Flinders Lane. There’s also one on Smith Street in Collingwood, Chapel Street in Windsor, Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn. The Chadstone and Westfield Knox shopping centres have one each, too.

In Sydney, Fonda Mexican has found a home in Bondi Beach and Surry Hills. The Bondi outlet is at 85 Hall Street, and the Surry Hills outlet is at 379 Crown Street.

Fonda Mexican menu

On the surface, the Fonda Mexican menu is fairly standard. It offers tacos, margaritas, quesadillas and burritos. But there are some interesting options in the mix. The taco menu, for example, includes sweet potato and fried cauliflower tacos. Meanwhile, there are herbed mushroom quesadillas and you can get a fresh market fish burrito.
