Goldilocks Bar: Why drink at this Melbourne rooftop bar?

Even by the standards of Melbourne rooftop bars, Goldilocks Bar is hard to find. But it offers plenty of locally-made drinks and a fairy tale-themed cocktail menu.

Goldilocks Bar is notoriously hard to find, but this Melbourne rooftop bar offers something different when you get there. It’s on top of the Denyers Building on Swanston Street, but access is via the Mr Kwok Chinese restaurant.

Being hidden is half of the charm, but Goldilocks Bar has some other interesting points of difference. These include being straw-free on the rooftop as part of a sustainability drive, and refusing to use animal products in the drinks. If you like milk or egg white in your cocktails, look elsewhere.

Goldilocks Bar cocktails

Cocktails are the main emphasis here, and there are some fun options to choose from. These include the broken chair, with dark rum, coffee, campari and pineapple. There’s also the Papa Bear, with tequila, apple pie moonshine and spices.

As you can probably work out, the cocktail names are themed on the Goldilocks and the Three Bears fairy tale.

For beer-drinkers, Goldilocks Bar usually has a range of around 30 beers on offer, but they are rotated frequently. In keeping with the sustainability ethos, however, most are sourced from Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Goldilocks Bar wines

Wine-drinkers have plenty to play with, too. Options include the Lana by Pizzini from the King Valley, the Boat O’Craigo single vineyard sauvignon blanc from the Yarra Valley and the Richardson Chockstone shiraz from the Grampians. Most of the wines are from Victoria, but there are a couple of French wines on the menu too.

The food at Goldilocks Bar is largely snacky – this isn’t really somewhere you come to for a meal. But you can try salt and chilli chicken ribs with hoisin sauce for $12. Six steamed pork dumplings cost the same amount.
