Angourie Blue Pool near Yamba, NSW: Swimming & cliff-jumping
The Angourie Blue Pool near Yamba, NSW, is a former quarry turned wild swimming pool. You can test your nerve by jumping off the cliffs here.
What is the Angourie Blue Pool?
The Angourie Blue Pool is a pool that formed inside a rock quarry in Angourie near Yamba, New South Wales. The quarry was used to build the original rock wall in Yamba, then abandoned shortly afterwards.
The Angourie Blue Pool is now a popular swimming spot.
Where is the Angourie Blue Pool?
The Angourie Blue Pool is in Angourie, which is essentially a suburb of Yamba on the Clarence Valley coast in the Northern Rivers region. It is just to the south of Spooky Beach.
Unlike many natural pools in New South Wales, the Angourie Blue Pool is not carved out of the rocks next to the ocean. It is a freshwater pool, fed by a spring, rather than filled by the incoming tide.
There is, however, an ocean rock pool right next to it
Cliff jumping at Angourie Blue Pool
The Angourie Blue Pool might be popular for swimming, but it is most notorious for cliff-jumping. There are small cliffs at the back of the pool, and local children love to test their mettle by jumping from them.
Of course, this is not entirely safe, and the water in the pool is surprisingly deep. But as places to attempt cliff-jumping go, there are far worse from a safety perspective.
Angourie Blue Pool closures
The Angourie Blue Pool is sometimes closed by the Clarence Valley Council due to blooms of algae. This is particularly common in the summer months when the conditions are ripe for the algae to bloom. When the Angourie Blue Pool is closed, switch to the neighbouring rock pool or Spooky Beach instead.
Other places to go for a swim in Yamba include Turners Beach, Yamba Main Beach and Pippi Beach. Alternatively, take the Clarence River ferry to Iluka.
