Pippi Beach, Yamba

Pippi Beach is Yamba’s 1.6km-long surf beach. It is patrolled during school holidays, and gets its name from the pippis that were once abundant in the sand.

What is Pippi Beach?

Pippi Beach is one of several beaches in Yamba, New South Wales. It gets its name from pippis – cockles, essentially – that were once notorious for being found on the beach at low tide. Alas, the pippis on Pippi Beach were overharvested, and now they are sporadic rather than abundant.

Where is Pippi Beach, Yamba

Pippi Beach is on Wooli Bay in Yamba. It stretches between South Head and Barri Point. Barri Beach is to the south, while Convent Beach, Yamba Main Beach and Turners Beach are on the northern side of South Head.

How long is Pippi Beach, Yamba?

Pippi Beach is 1.6 miles long and faces south-east. The northern section is sometimes known as McKittricks Beach. The grassy area behind the beach is known as Dolphin Park.

There are residential buildings behind the northern part of the beach, but Pippi Beach is much quieter and backed by bushland at the southern end.

Is Pippi Beach patrolled?

The Clarence Valley Council runs beach patrols at Pippi Beach during the NSW and Queensland school holidays. The surf lifesavers are based at the northern end of the beach. In the interests of safety, swim between the flags at this northern end.

This is where you’ll also find the main car park, picnic tables and toilets.

Yamba’s surf beach

However, Pippi Beach is best known as Yamba’s surf beach. When there are big southern swells, the waves can be dangerously big here.

But Yamba’s surf beach is rarely a duckpond, and waves tend to be about 1.5 metres high on average. The best part of the beach for surfing depends on where the wind is coming from.

Is Pippi Beach dog-friendly?

The southern end of Pippi Beach is dog-friendly, with a designated leash-free area.
