Is the Aquarium of Western Australia worth visiting?

The Aquarium of Western Australia at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, Perth, is one of the city’s top attractions.

The Aquarium of Western Australia – also known as AQWA – is one of the top tourist attractions in Perth. To skip the explanation and book mobile-friendly tickets, step this way…

Where is AQWA?

AQWA is located just 30 minutes from Perth CBD, at Hillary’s Boat Harbour. This is where the Hillarys to Rottnest Island ferry leaves from.

The aquarium showcases the Indian Ocean coastline around Perth, with hundreds of species of marine life from the region on display. But there is plenty from elsewhere in the world, too.

AQWA discovery zones

The AQWA experience takes you on an underwater journey through five discovery zones, each with a special marine life exhibit. From the icy waters of the Southern Ocean to the tropical waters of northern WA, you’ll see an incredible variety of marine life in their natural habitats.

The highlight of Perth’s main aquarium is the 100 metre underwater tunnel where you can watch the sea life overhead.

However, there are also touch pools, where visitors can interact with sea stars, sea cucumbers and more.

As aquariums go, AQWA is in the good to very good category without realistically being a must-see.

When to visit the Aquarium of Western Australia

AQWA tends to be busy with school groups and families in the mornings. Come in the afternoon for a more relaxed, quieter experience. The opening hours are 9.00 to 16.00 every day.

How much does AQWA cost?

General entrance tickets to the Aquarium of Western Australia cost $32. Tickets can be pre-purchased online.

Prices and opening hours are correct at the time of writing but subject to change in future.

Other Perth attractions include the Swan Bells, Perth Mint and Kings Park. While in the city, you can also try a Swan Valley food and wine tour, ziplining from the Matagarup Bridge and a small bars and street art walking tour.
