The Grampians region

The Grampians in Victoria is one of the most underrated areas in Australia. The region is a series of small, sandstone mountain ranges with an abundance of native Australian wildlife, waterfalls such as MacKenzie Falls and Aboriginal rock art. There’s also good food and wine to be enjoyed.

Inland from the more fabled Great Ocean Road, the Grampians National Park is around 260km west of Melbourne. It’s a great spot for bushwalking, rock-climbing and kangaroo-spotting. There are also a series of excellent lookouts, many of which can be driven to fairly easily. Or, in the case of the Balconies, walked to.

Boroka Lookout from Halls Gap

This is partly because it’s easy to get to. The Boroka Lookout is 15km from the pretty town of Halls Gap, and there’s plenty of parking. It’s a five minute walk from car park to viewing platforms. Importantly, the walk has been designed to accommodate people with limited mobility.

The view from there is marvellous, with Lake Bellfield providing a focal point, and the eastern sections of the Grampians creating a rippling effect. Halls Gap can be seen below, while the Wonderland and Mt William mountain ranges provide a forested, green frame.

For photographers, there are also plenty of jutting, overhanging rocks to place in the foreground of a picture.
