Lake Bellfield is a reservoir in the Grampians region of Victoria. It supplies water to the town of Halls Gap and Pomonal.

Where is Lake Bellfield?

The lake is about 5km from the centre of Halls Gap, and is surrounded by the Grampians National Park. The location of Lake Bellfield, surrounded by the rumpled green mountains of the Grampians, is enviable. It’s no wonder, therefore, that it’s a popular spot with locals and visitors.

The nearest part of the lake to Halls Gap is the northern end. Here’s where you’ll find the Lake Bellfield Lookout. The views are delightful, but be warned – you can’t swim here, and there are no picnic facilities.

The Lake Bellfield picnic area is further south on the eastern shore of the lake. This Grampians picnic area acts as the main hub for the lake, and is 6.2km south of Halls Gap. You can drive there in about six minutes, and there’s a car park to pull up in.

Swimming in Lake Bellfield, Victoria

The Lake Bellfield picnic area also has toilets and a rudimentary beach. It’s the best place in the lake to go swimming, although be warned that the water can be surprisingly cold.

Fishing in Lake Bellfield is permitted – redfin and river blackfish are among the species in the lake. It’s also possible to go boating. However, as the lake is the local water supply, internal combustion engines are banned. As per GWM Water rules, it’s an electric motors-only place.
