Broulee Beach, NSW: Swimming and surfing guide

Broulee Beach, NSW, is one that works for both swimming and surfing. This South Coast beach is about 20km south of Batemans Bay.

Can you swim at Broulee Beach?

It is possible to swim at Broulee Beach and it is reasonably safe to do so. Broulee Island is the secret weapon here, as it offers considerable protection from ocean swells.

That’s not total protection, mind. On days with big waves, the rips can become considerably fiercer. Generally, conditions are tamer the further south you go on the beach.

Broulee Beach is patrolled between September and April each year.

Surfing at Broulee Beach

Surfing at Broulee Beach is also possible. Experienced surfers should aim for around the creek mouth, where waves tend to be bigger.

The Surf The Bay surf school is also based here, as well as in Narooma. Surf The Bay offers surfing lessons and stand-up paddleboarding lessons.

Broulee Beach facilities

Facilities at Broulee Beach, however, are not great. There’s a toilet block at the northern end, but there’s no playground or park behind the beach.

For entertainment, you can walk round to Broulee Island. Most of the time, it’s not an island, and is connected to the beach by a narrow spit. However, in very high seas, it can become cut off.

Broulee Island is renowned as a good snorkelling spot.

Food and drink at Broulee Beach

For food and drink at Broulee Beach, the Broulee Supermarket is at the southern end. In the middle, Single Fin is a good bet for coffees and snacks, while the Broulee Brewhouse offers more substantial meals and premises-brewed craft beers.

Accommodation options in Broulee include the Ingenia Holidays holiday park. Other beaches around Batemans Bay include Barlings BeachMerry Beach and Pebbly Beach.
