Things to do on the Nullarbor: Point Sinclair and Fowlers Bay

The first detours should be at Penong. The Penong Windmill Museum is a delightfully weird collection of windmills, all spinning away on an otherwise featureless patch of dirt.

Go south down the Point Sinclair Road at the western edge of Penong, however, and there are some seriously impressive sights. First up is Lake MacDonnell, a lake turned pink by salt and algae. A causeway crosses the lake, and towering bright white sand dunes line the horizon. Further down the Point Sinclair Road is Cactus Beach, one of the most fabled surfing spots in Australia. At the end of the line of the Great Ocean Bight, there’s a netted swimming area at Point Sinclair.

46km west of Penong is the turn-off for Fowlers Bay, perhaps the most attractive village on the Nullarbor. Walk around, and a series of signs tell of Fowlers Bay’s past – it’s largely about whaling and telegraph lines. You can also go fishing or explore the massive sand dune that frames the settlement.

It’s also one of the few places on the Nullarbor drive where you can book onto an organised tour. EP Cruises runs whale-watching cruises. They’re best in the winter months, when the southern right whales use the bay as a nursery.
