Driving the Nullarbor: Western Australia

Once into Western Australia, the Nullarbor drive becomes more of a grind. But Eucla has something to offer. Displays tell of the settlement’s crucial role in connecting Australia via telegraph. The old telegraph station is still here – now an evocative ruin amongst the dunes. From the Eucla telegraph station, it’s about a 20 minute walk through the sand to the ocean. This is one of the few places on the Nullarbor drive where you can dip your toes in the water.

Elsewhere on the Western Australian stretch, the Cocklebiddy Cave near Cocklebiddy roadhouse is one of the longest caves on earth. Alas, most of it is underwater, suitable only for highly experienced cave divers. Still, you can look at the entrance.
