Things to do on the Nullarbor: Head of Bight

Further along the Nullarbor road trip, however, you can see whales without getting on a boat. Just before you reach the Nullarbor Roadhouse is Head of Bight. This is the most northerly point of the Great Australian Bight, and it’s approximately 17.5km off the Eyre Highway.

The visitor information centre at Head of Bight acts as an excellent mini-museum, explaining the Nullarbor’s geology and ecology. There’s lots on the southern right whales that congregate around Head of Bight, too. You can see them from the clifftop boardwalk between (roughly) May and October. Even if the whales aren’t there, the Head of Bight Lookout is extraordinary, with a visible divide between the sweeping sand dunes to the east and the towering Bunda Cliffs stretching way into the horizon when you look west.
