Australia is well known for its incredible beaches. Bells Beach in Victoria is world famous for its surf, Bondi Beach in Sydney is people-watching central and Lucky Bay near Esperance in Western Australia has extraordinarily white sand.

What is the longest beach in Australia?

But all of these Australian beaches are tiny compared to one beach in South Australia. The longest beach in Australia stretches from Cape Jaffa in the south, all the way along the Younghusband Peninsula to the Mouth of the Murray River.

Absurdly, the longest beach in Australia doesn’t have an official name, but it is often called the Coorong. This isn’t quite right, however, as the Coorong is the name given to the lagoon system behind the Younghusband Peninsula. And most of the area is part of the Coorong National Park, which is a separate entity again.

The beach is sometimes called Ocean Beach. And that’s probably what you’ll hear it called on Coorong boat tours.

How long is the Coorong beach?

The Coorong beach is 194km long. It’s so long, in fact, that you can treat it as a highway. 4WD vehicles are allowed to drive all the way up the beach. It’s important to check tide times, though, as the beach isn’t always accessible at high tide.

The other way to visit is on a boat cruise. The Spirit of the Coorong runs cruises down the Coorong lagoon system from Goolwa. These stop at Godfreys Landing on the lagoon side of the peninsula, where a short walking trail through the dunes leads to Ocean Beach.

Pipis on Coorong beach

Once on the beach, you can wriggle your toes around in the wet sand in the hunt for cockles. There are so many cockles on the Coorong beach that they are commercially harvested. Australians tend to call cockles pipis, however.

To reserve your spot on a Coorong cruise, book online.

There’s also a longer, more in-depth six hour discovery cruise. That said, arguably the most magical way to visit the Coorong beach is on a full day kayaking tour.
