That reputation has developed far enough for there to be a Van Diemens Land Creamery outlet on the Hobart waterfront.

But if you want the original, head to the north of the state – Elizabeth Town is on the drive from Devonport to Launceston.

Here, the Van Diemens Land Creamery café serves up gelato and ice cream with a dessert menu. The café is licenced, so you can also enjoy beer, wine and spirits too.

You can also buy other locally-made products, and watch the ice cream being made through the window of the production room.

History of Van Diemens Land Creamery

The company started in 2005, when a dairy farming family decided to add value to the milk produced on the farm. At first, the ice cream was being served within 24 hours of the milk coming from the cow.

Perhaps the most distinctive thing about the Van Diemens Land Creamery is that it concentrates on fresh Tasmanian products. The milk is a given, but other tastes of Tassie include locally-grown lavender plus Tasmanian whisky, honey, peanut butter and olive oil.

Some native ingredients are also thrown into the mix. Some of the more interesting flavours include peach and lemon myrtle, wildberry ripple and caramelised fig. Visit the company website for a full list.

If you fancy going on something of a tasting tour while in northern Tasmania, the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm is just across the road.
