The oldest winery in Victoria

But why should you visit the oldest winery in Victoria? Other than being able to say you’ve ticked that box, of course?

Well, it’s partly about heritage. The Yering Station cellar door is in the original winery building, and staff are happy to expand on Yering Station’s history. Heritage elements such as the grand avenue flanked by elm trees have been carefully kept in place.

Yering Station awards

It’s also partly about the quality. Yering Station first gained global acclaim in 1861 when its wine won the Argus Gold Cup. In 1889, they were awarded a Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris.

Wild yeast fermentation, hand-plunging and French oak maturation are among the processes used. And annual allocation of wine parcels is done in a blind tasting. The best parcels go towards the most prestigious wines.

The Scarlett is Yering Station’s signature wine – it’s a pinot noir made in very limited quantities. But next on the rung is the flagship collection, made from the best parcels of the year’s crop.

There’s also a ‘reserve tasting bench’, where you can linger a little longer and taste the premium wines. The fee here is $15 – again, refundable if you buy a bottle.
