Perth to Brisbane road trip: Best stops, distance & drive time
Perth to Brisbane drive: Stop in Moree?
From Walgett, the Castlereagh Highway heads north to opal mining town Lightning Ridge. But you stay on the Kamilaroi Highway for Moree.
On the way, you can check out the Collymongle Carved Trees near Collarenebri. Hand-carved by local Indigenous people, these trees have ended up in museums around the world and there are only a few of them left.
Things to do in Moree include birdwatching at the Waterbird Lagoon bird hide in the Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Area, visiting the Bank Art Museum and swimming at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre.
What’s the best Moree accommodation?
Moree makes a logical overnight stop on many road trips. These are the best accommodation choices.
- For exclusive artesian spa pools: Artesian Spa Motel.
- For great reviews & a restaurant: Albert Motel.
- For solid, well-priced apartments with a pool: Jackaroo Apartments.
Goondiwindi attractions and accommodation
Moree is also where the Perth to Brisbane drive joins the Newell Highway. This will take you 116km from Moree to Goondiwindi, and over the Queensland border.
Goondiwindi is a cotton town with an arty streak, hence Goondiwindi Cotton runs tours along an art and sculpture trail as well as around the cotton farm. The Customs House Museum does a good line in local history, especially when it comes to extracting tolls from dastardly New South Welshmen.
