Yarrawonga to Albury road trip: Yarrawonga to Rutherglen
The first stretch of Yarrawonga to Albury drive follows Yarrawonga’s main attraction – Lake Mulwala. You can often see ghostly gum trees rising out of the water.
The waterways get very messy as Lake Mulwala, the Ovens River and the Murray River converge. There are several basic campgrounds by the waterways in the Lower Ovens Wildlife Reserve.
After crossing the Ovens, you enter the Rutherglen wine region, with Warrabilla Wines a handy option for wine-tasting by the Murray Valley Highway.
For a more scenic spot, you can visit Lake Moodemere Estate by the Lake Moodemere Reserve.
Perhaps the most impressive Rutherglen wineries, however, require a small deviation north to Wahgunyah.
Valhalla Wines, Cofield Wines and Pfeiffer Wines are good choices, but the star is the All Saints Winery, which has a castle on its grounds.
On the other side of the Murray River from Wahgunyah is Corowa, NSW. Here, you can learn about how Australia became a country at the Corowa Federation Museum and indulge at Corowa Whisky & Chocolate.
Yarrawonga to Albury drive: Yarrawonda to Rutherglen
Otherwise, keep going along the Murray Valley Highway, through Rutherglen. You’ll pass the De Bortoli Rutherglen Winery – owned by one of Australia’s major wine producers – then join the Hume Freeway just outside Wodonga.
Wodonga’s top attraction is the Bonegilla Migrant Experience, a vast former immigrant reception camp turned museum near the western shore of Lake Hume.
Wodonga and Albury are essentially one town split by the Murray River and the New South Wales/ Victoria border, however.
Once into New South Wales, highlights of Albury include river kayaking trips and the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk.
