Lake Tyrrell accommodation: Camping, motel or Sea Lake caravan park?

Lake Tyrrell accommodation: Camping, motel or Sea Lake caravan park?

Camping at Lake Tyrrell in Victoria is not permitted. The nearest Lake Tyrrell accommodation options are the Sea Lake caravan park, plus the more costly motels and the Royal Hotel.

Lake Tyrrell in Victoria’s Mallee Region is one of the most photogenic salt lakes in Australia. It’s at its best on a clear winter night, when the night sky is reflected in the shallow, salt-bottomed water.

But if you’re planning to stop at Lake Tyrrell on the Bendigo to Mildura leg of the Melbourne to Mildura drive, that means you’re going to have to stop nearby for the night.

The unfortunate news on Lake Tyrrell accommodation is that camping isn’t allowed on the lake itself. Indeed, the nearest Lake Tyrrell accommodation of any kind is in the town of Sea Lake, about 7km south of the main viewing platform.

Sea Lake Motel

The good news is that there are a few accommodation options in Sea Lake. These include the Sea Lake Motel, which is solidly decent, and does pretty much what you’d expect a motel to do. But there is the added bonus of a small pool.

Queen rooms at the Sea Lake Motel cost from $135 per night.

Lake Tyrrell Accommodation and Royal Hotel Sea Lake

Alternative Sea Lake accommodation comes via the villa and motel rooms of the cynically-named Lake Tyrrell Accommodation. The double rooms cost from $120 per night.

For a more atmospheric place to stay near Lake Tyrrell, try the Royal Hotel Sea Lake. This handsome, old-fashioned country pub has ten rooms, but bathrooms are shared. Rooms cost from $99 per night.

Lake Tyrrell camping and Sea Lake caravan park

For a Lake Tyrrell camping experience, however, your best bet is Sea Lake caravan park. This Lake Tyrrell caravan park is unfortunately in the town rather than by the lake shore, so you’re still going to have to drive for those night time photos.

The only realistic Lake Tyrrell camping option is also very basic – it works on an honesty box system. The Sea Lake caravan park is next to the Sea Lake Recreation Reserve, and has nine powered sites.
