Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk in Toolangi, Victoria

Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk in Toolangi, Victoria

On the ridges of the northern Yarra Valley, the Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk in Toolangi Victoria is a family-friendly creekside boardwalk.

The Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk is one of those short, simple walks that are ideal for adding into a day’s itinerary.

This Yarra Valley rainforest boardwalk is only one kilometre long, and is set up to be family-friendly. The walk is rated as a grade two trail, although that’s perhaps on the conservative side. You can easily push a pram along it and cajole a toddler to walk it.

Where is the Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk?

The Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk is near Toolangi, in the northern, hillier part of the Yarra Valley area. It’s along Sylvia Creek Road, which branches off the Myers Creek Road. You could easily visit as part of a day trip from Melbourne.

The trailhead is at the Wirrawilla car park, which is just off the Sylvia Creek Road. Keep an eye out in the car park – wallabies sometimes hang out there.

What to see on the Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk

Once on the boardwalk, a creek runs alongside for much of the loop. The trail passes through mountain ash, sassafras and myrtle beech trees. It’s undemanding, and inessential, but arguably a pleasant addition to a self-guided Yarra Valley day trip. An alternative, slightly trickier walk is to La La Falls in Warburton.

Other Yarra Valley experiences include hop-on, hop-off tours, Warburton walking tours and white-water rafting. You can also try hot air balloon flights and visits to wineries such as RochfordBalgownie Estate or Yering Station.
