What are the biggest stadiums in Australia?

The biggest stadiums in Australia are the MCG, Stadium Australia, Optus Stadium and Adelaide Oval. Most offer stadium tours and other unusual adventure activities.

Australia is a sport-mad country, with huge crowds turning out for rugby union, rugby league, AFL, cricket and football matches.

But some of these crowds are more huge than other. And while the relative popularity of sports and teams plays a part in this, stadium capacity is the key.

The biggest stadium in Australia

The biggest stadium in Australia is the Melbourne Cricket Ground – known to almost all as the MCG. Melbourne’s great colosseum of cricket and AFL has a capacity of 100,024. Guided MCG tours are one of the best things to do in Melbourne – there’s a good mix of spectacle and heritage.

The MCG was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympics, and Australia’s second biggest stadium hosted the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. It is also home to the Australian Sports Museum.

Second biggest stadium in Australia

The Sydney Olympic Stadium is currently known as the Accor Stadium, although the sponsorship changes hands fairly often. Stadium Australia is the non-commercial name. It has a capacity of 83,500, and mainly hosts rugby union and rugby league games. At time of writing, stadium tours weren’t running due to infrastructure works.

Biggest stadiums in Australia: Perth and Adelaide

Third on the list of the biggest stadiums in Australia is the relatively new Optus Stadium in Perth, which has a capacity of 60,000. Optus Stadium tours are available, but the tour of the ‘Halo’ 42 metres above the stadium is much more adventurous.

Also fairly new is the fourth biggest stadium in Australia – the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. The overhauled stadium still contains elements of its previous, humbler incarnation. These include the manual scoreboard, which is the highlight of the Adelaide Oval stadium tour. You can also go climbing on the roof and stay in the Adelaide Oval Hotel, which wraps around the stadium. The Adelaide Oval has a capacity of 53,500.
