The Mash Brewery in Western Australia’s Swan Valley is among scores of craft breweries changing the perception of Australian beer.

In Henley Brook, just outside Perth, the Mash Brewery has been brewing since 2006. Unlike some other microbreweries, which treat beermaking as a competition to pack in as many hops as possible, this Swan Valley brewery aims for balanced beers.

You can also taste those beers on site. The Mash Brewery and Brasserie is a cavernous brewpub, and the beers it serves are as fresh as it gets.

Mash Brewery menu: Beers and food

The core range for the Mash Brewery includes the 6.5% Copycat Australian IPA, the 4.4% Pale Ale, the 5.6% Guvnor Pale Ale and the 4.5% Freo Doctor WA Lager. More unusual drinks in the core range include the Little NE IPA, which is just 3.5% ABV. Then there’s the 5.8% Lemon Lime Cheesecake IPA.

As with most Australian craft breweries, the core range is complemented by a series of seasonal and experimental beers. Which of these they have on tap obviously depends on when you drop by to visit.

However, the options might include the 6% Hazy Bogan New England IPA, the 8.5% High Octane Russian Imperial Stout and the 6.2% Locky Road Nitro Milk Stout.

The food menu at the Mash Brewery concentrates on pub staples. Expect burgers, chicken parmas, steaks and beer-battered fish.

The Mash Brewery opening hours are 11am to 4pm from Monday to Thursday, and 11am to sundown on Sundays. On Friday and Saturday, the Swan Valley brewpub is open from 11am to late. For more information, visit the Mash Brewing website.

Mash isn’t the only Swan Valley Brewery. You can also taste locally made beers at Duckstein and the Bailey Brewing Co. Nearby Swan Valley wineries include the Little River Winery, Oakover Grounds, Black Swan Winery and Henley Park Winery. If you’ve got kids in tow, an hour at the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm or Caversham Wildlife Park in Whiteman Park should buy you some time in the pub afterwards.
