The route goes south through Albury, crossing the Murray River into twin town Wodonga. The Albury to Wangaratta drive then swings west towards Barnawartha. The Barnawartha Scenic Reserve is just next to the highway, but is nothing to get giddily excited about.

Next up is Chiltern, home of the Chiltern Motor Museum. This labour of love is for the avid petrolheads only.

Chiltern also gives its name to the Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park, but this requires an annoyingly sizable detour. Still, should you want to visit, highlights here include the walk to the summit of Mount Pilot. There are also several picnic areas, plus Woolshed Falls. The latter is close to Beechworth, and if you’re going this way you may as well skip Wangaratta and just drive through the Victoria High Country.

The Hume Highway swings south again at Springhurst, then crosses the Ovens River on the way into Wangaratta.

Wangaratta is a reasonably large rural service town. Things to do in Wangaratta include ticking off the Aboriginal sculptures on the Bullawah Cultural Trail and swimming on the Northern Beaches. These beaches are on the Ovens River, and show there’s more to the Aussie beach scene than Bondi or Bells Beach.
