Tourists can happily forget about the suburban section of the route. This goes through Mont Albert, Surrey Hills, Balwyn, Deepdene, Kew and Richmond. Things get more interesting when the 109 trm enters East Melbourne, however. It stops close to Fitzroy Gardens, home of Cooks’ Cottage, before going past St Patrick’s Cathedral and along Collins Street.

By now, the 109 tram is inside the Melbourne Free Tram Zone. It crosses the CBD along Collins Street towards Southern Cross Station, before turning south on Spencer Street. The main stop of interest to visitors is likely to be the Crown casino and entertainment complex on Melbourne’s South Bank.

The 109 tram then passes through the South Melbourne tram depot before entering Port Melbourne and terminating at Beacon Cove.

Run by Yarra Trams, the 109 tram in Melbourne is quite frequent. On Mondays to Fridays, the trams run between every six and 15 minutes. They are most frequent at peak commuter times.

Obviously, very few people are going to ride the 109 tram for the entire length of its route. But should you choose to, the journey should take just under an hour.
