Eucla to Norseman drive: WA Nullarbor distance, time & fuel stops

The Eucla to Norseman drive is the toughest leg of a Nullarbor road trip, passing through a particularly empty section of Western Autralia. The Eucla to Norseman distance is 709km, making for a 7h13m driving time.

Long and lonely, the Eucla to Norseman drive forms the Western Australian section of the Nullarbor road trip. You’ll encounter it if doing the drive from Adelaide to Perth or Sydney to Perth.

Given that Eucla is arguably the best place for an overnight stay on the Nullarbor, it’s best to break the journey into two legs. Drive from Ceduna to Eucla first, then from Eucla to Norseman the day after.

Don’t want to drive the Nullarbor? Then consider a ten day camping adventure tour from Perth to Adelaide (or in the opposite direction).

To say this is not the most exciting stretch of road in Australia would be an enormous understatement. But that’s kinda the point of doing the Nullarbor drive – it’s a rite of passage and a test of endurance. It also includes 90 Mile Straight – Australia’s longest stretch of straight road.

Roadhouses are sprinkled sporadically throughout the Eucla to Norseman drive. You can stop for fuel, drinks and snacks at Mundrabilla, Madura, Cocklebiddy, Caiguna and Balladonia.

Eucla to Norseman drive: Best Eyre Highway roadhouse

Of these Eyre Highway roadhouses, Balladonia is by far the most interesting. This is where the Skylab space station crashed to earth in 1979. The Balladonia roadhouse has an interesting little museum that looks at the mad scramble to retrieve souvenirs from the Skylab crash.

The one thing that’s perhaps surprising about the Eucla to Norseman drive is how little of it is through classic Nullarbor Plain starkness. The western chunk of the journey is characterised more by woodland. It’s thinly-spread woodland, sure, but it’s not as barren as you’re perhaps expecting…

It’s hard to avoid spending a night in Norseman. Once there, decent accommodation options include the motel-style Great Western Travel Village and the budget-friendly Acclaim Gateway Tourist Park.
