How long is the Olympic Highway and which towns should I stop at?

The Olympic Highway in New South Wales is 318km. The most interesting towns to stop at on a road trip include Young, Junee and Wagga Wagga.

The Olympic Highway is a largely rural road that connects several towns in Central Western New South Wales and the Riverina. Few tourists are likely to drive along the entire highway, but there’s a decent chance than you’ll end up along a stretch of it.

How long is the Olympic Highway, NSW?

The Olympic Highway is 318km long. It links the Mid-Western Highway in Cowra to the Hume Highway in Table Top, just north of Albury. For much of its length, the Olympic Highway runs parallel to the Hume Highway further east and the Newell Highway further west.

After Cowra, the Olympic Highway passes through Koorawatha, Young and Wombat. Of these three towns. Of these three, Young is the most interesting. You can pick your own cherries here and visit the Young Historical Museum – formerly known as the Lambing Flat Folk Museum.

Olympic Highway towns: Junee and Wagga Wagga

After Wombat, the Olympic Highway meets Burley-Griffin Way at Wallendbeen then skirts the edge of Junee. If you’re looking for a good stop on the drive, Junee has a few road trip attractions. These include the Junee Chocolate Factory. The Goldfields Way to West Wyalong branches off from Old Junee.

Next up, the Junee to Wagga Wagga drive takes about half an hour, and Wagga Wagga is the biggest city on the Olympic Highway. Wagga Beach on the Murrumbidgee River is justifiably popular.

At Wagga Wagga, the Olympic Highway meets the Sturt Highway, arguably the main east to west route across New South Wales.

The drive from Wagga Wagga to Albury is mostly along the Olympic Highway, and fairly mundane. Things to do in Albury once there include Murray River kayaking tours, the Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail and the hugely interesting Bonegilla Migrant Experience.
