Mid-Western Highway, NSW: Length, towns & junctions

The Mid-Western Highway runs for 518km between Bathurst and Hay, NSW. Decent-sized towns on the route include Cowra, West Wyalong and Goolgowi.

The Mid-Western Highway connects vast tracts of country New South Wales. Most overseas visitors will never have cause to go anywhere near it, but it is a vital route connecting the country towns of the Central West and Riverina.

How long is the Mid-Western Highway, NSW?

The Mid-Western Highway is 518km long, and defiantly rural. It begins in Bathurst, at the junction with the Mitchell Highway and Great Western Highway.

From there, it passes through Blayney towards Cowra, where it intersects with the Lachlan Valley Way and crosses the Lachlan River.

The Mid-Western Highway also meets the Olympic Highway, which heads south to Young, Junee and Wagga Wagga, in Cowra.

Mid-Western Highway: A41 or B64?

On the Bathurst to Cowra stretch, the Mid-Western Highway carries the A41 badge. After that, utterly confusingly, it becomes the B64.

After this point, it passes through Grenfell, then meets the Newell Highway at Marsden. It runs concurrently with the Newell Highway through Wyalong, where the Goldfields Way branches off, to West Wyalong.

Mid-Western Highway towns: Goolgowi

The next major junction on the Mid-Western Highway is at Goolowi, where it meets the Kidman Way heading between Griffith and Bourke.

From Goolgowi, the Mid-Western Highway continues south-west to its end-point in the Riverina hub town of Hay. Here, it meets the Cobb Highway very close to the Cobb’s junction with the Sturt Highway.
