Warrego Highway, Queensland: Length and best towns on the drive

The Warrego Highway in Queensland is 715km long. Major towns along the route include Toowoomba, Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles, Roma, Morven and Chinchilla.

The Warrego Highway is one of the main east-to-west routes across Queensland, Australia. It starts near the coast and heads into the outback, linking several other major highways along the way.

Warrego Highway length

This Queensland highway is designated as National Highway A2, and stretches for a length of 715km.

The Warrego Highway begins branching off the Ipswich Highway from Ipswich to Brisbane. It bypasses both Ipswich and Toowoomba as it crosses the Great Dividing Range.

At Toowoomba, the Warrego Highway meets the New England Highway coming from the south.

From there, the Warrego Highway continues across the Darling Downs region from Toowoomba to Dalby. Heritage-heavy Dalby is where you’ll come to the junctions of the Moonee Highway and Bunya Highway.

Warrego Highway towns: Chinchilla, Miles and Roma

The Dalby to Roma drive brings the Warrego Highway closer to the outback, although the Dalby to Chinchilla leg is more rural Australiana. Chinchilla is famous for its watermelons.

Chinchilla accommodation options include the Club Motor InnChinchilla Great Western Motor Inn and Acacia Motel.

From Chinchilla to Roma, the main place to stop is Miles. This is where you’ll find Chinamans Lagoon, full of pink waterlilies, and the junction of the Leichhardt Highway.

Roma is a major crossroads town, and the biggest settlement for a long way in either direction. It feels not quite country, not quite outback, but you really feel like you’re heading into the middle of nowhere as you continue west.

Morven and Charleville

The other major highway running through Roma is the Carnarvon Highway, which heads south until it meets the Gwydir Highway in Moree, New South Wales.

The Warrego Highway continues on to Morven, where it meets the Landsborough Highway, and ends in Charleville. Now, Charleville is a proper outback town, and the Warrego Highway joins the Mitchell Highway here.
