What towns are on the Mitchell Highway, Australia?

The Mitchell Highway through New South Wales and Queensland is 1,105km long. It connects inland cities including Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, Bourke, Cunnamulla and Charleville.

The Mitchell Highway in Australia is one of the country’s odder trunk routes. It connects several second rank towns in central and northern New South Wales before heading into southern Queensland. It never really goes near any major cities, and its major task seems to be connecting other highways to each other.

Mitchell Highway badges: A32, B71 and A71

The Mitchell Highway carries several badges along its somewhat eclectic route. Depending on which section you’re on, it’s the A32, B71 or A71. It is named in honour of Sir Thomas Mitchell, who explored vast swathes of the land that the highway passes through.

The start of the Mitchell Highway is in Bathurst, New South Wales. Here it branches off the Great Western Highway, which runs from Sydney to Bathurst.

Queensland end of the Mitchell Highway

The Mitchell Highway ends at the Landsborough Highway in Augathella, Queensland. In total it stretches for 1,105km.

From the southern end, the Mitchell Highway connects Bathurst to Orange, then Orange to Dubbo. In Dubbo, it meets the Golden Highway heading to Newcastle, and the Newell Highway.

Once over the Darling River, the Mitchell Highway heads into Queensland into Cunnamulla, where the Bulloo Developmental Road and Balonne Highway branch off. The mighty Mitchell then goes from Cunnamulla to Charleville, where it meets the Warrego Highway.

From there, the Mitchell Highway’s last leg is the relatively short stint from Charleville to Augathella.

Once in Augathella, accommodation options include the Augathella Motel and Caravan Park and the Augathella Palms Motel.
