Augathella, Queensland, isn’t exactly on most travellers’ bucket list. But plenty end up there anyway – it’s a classic crossroads town.

Augathella is on the banks of the Warrego River, and is where the Mitchell Highway meets the Landsborough Highway. Most people passing through will be on a longer drive – probably the Roma to Longreach leg of the Brisbane to Mount Isa road trip.

There are, however, a few things to do in Augathella, Queensland. And some are rather bizarre.

Meat Ant Park is a classic case in point. This park hosts the Giant Meat Ant – one of Australia’s more ludicrous Big Things. Apparently, it is more than a million times the size of a real meat ant.

Things to do in Augathella, Queensland: Kenniff Tree and Main Street murals

On Cavanagh Street, you’ll find the Kenniff Tree, which has become a symbol of bushrangers James and Patrick Kenniff. These two bushrangers escaped authority for more than a decade, and signs around the tree tell their story.

The main attraction in Augathella, however, is Main Street. Here, a series of murals have been painted, mostly depicting local history, lifestyle and industry. The biggest of these murals is on the water tower. This mural shows an emu standing by the Warrego River.
