Cunningham Highway, Queensland: Length, towns and junctions

The Cunningham Highway runs for 327km across southern Queensland, starting in Ipswich and finishing in Goondiwindi.

The Cunningham Highway is one of the main east to west routes through southern Queensland. It heads from Ipswich towards Goondiwindi, on the border with New South Wales. It carries the National Highway A15 badge for part of the journey, before becoming National Highway A42.

How long is the Cunningham Highway?

The length of the Cunningham Highway is 327km. Most of this passes through the Darling Downs region of Queensland. It’s a country road rather than an outback one, and is single carriageway for most of its length.

The Cunningham Highway begins on the outskirts of Ipswich at the junction with the Ipswich Motorway and Warrego Highway. About 14km into the drive, you’ll pass the junction with the Centenary Highway. And shortly after that, the Cunningham Highway ceases to become a motorway.

Cunningham Highway through the Darling Downs

The next major junction is at Glengallan in the Darling Downs, where it meets the New England Highway heading north to Toowoomba. Here, the two highways temporarily merge again, until they reach Warwick – the biggest town on the route. At Warwick, the Cunningham Highway continues west, while the New England Highway branches off south towards Stanthorpe.

West of Warwick, the Cunningham Highway is almost totally rural. It goes through Karara and Inglewood on the way into Goondiwindi.

Highway junctions in Goondiwindi

Here, it joins with the Leichhardt Highway and Barwon Highway before merging into the Newell Highway. The Newell Highway goes south through New South Wales to the Victorian border. For traffic conditions, visit the QLDtraffic site.
