Gregory Highway, QLD: How long is it and what towns are on it?

The Gregory Highway in Queensland is 174km long, and runs from Springsure to Clermont. However, it continues north past Charters Towers as the Gregory Developmental Road.

The Gregory Highway is Queensland is a south to north road largely designed to connect coal-mining communities. Most overseas visitors will have no cause to drive on the Gregory Highway, unless they’re planning a trip through inland Queensland.

This tends to be a road used more by freight than tourists or people commuting between the towns along the route.

Gregory Highway length

The Gregory Highway is 174km long. It runs from Springsure to Clermont, where it officially becomes the Gregory Developmental Road. Bundle the two together – and with road improvements and time it will eventually all be called the Gregory Highway – and you’re looking at a 930km road. The Gregory Developmental Road finishes at Mount Surprise, where it joins the Gulf Developmental Road (aka National Highway 1 in these parts).

Some of the northern section of the Gregory Developmental road is unsealed, but the section from Emerald to Charters Towers is largely dual lane and good quality.

Gregory Highway from Springsure to Clermont

The Gregory Highway begins in Springsure as a branch-off from the Dawson Highway. It then continues to Emerald, where it meets the Capricorn Highway running west from Rockhampton.

Emerald accommodation options include the Emerald Maraboon Motor Inn, which offers a pool and tropical gardens, plus the more central Midlander Motor Inn.

The highway then continues north from Emerald to Clermont, where it gets rebadged as the Gregory  Developmental Road. The junction with the Peak Downs Highway is also in Clermont.
