Sydney to Tweed Heads road trip: Distance, drive time & stops
Sydney to Tweed Heads road trip: Stay in Port Macquarie?
The drive from Taree to Port Macquarie brings the Cattai Wetlands in Coopernook, although diverting coastward for Crowdy Bay National Park is more rewarding. The Diamond Head campground is a notoriously good place for spotting kangaroos.
Meanwhile, near the Pacific Highway, you can see the gigantic Bird Tree in Middle Brother National Park, drive past Queens Lake and maybe pay Lake Cathie a visit.
The drive then continues past Queens Lake, with Lake Cathie an optional coastal diversion.
Port Macquarie is a logical overnight stop, roughly halfway into the journey. Turn east at the junction with the Oxley Highway to head into town.
Things to do in Port Macquarie include the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, riding camels on Lighthouse Beach and taking scenic helicopter flights.
