Where is Tocumwal, NSW?
Tocumwal is one of several border towns that line up along the Murray River. This one is in New South Wales, but there are dozens of others in Victoria.
Tocumwal’s issue is that even though it’s on a stretch of the Murray that veers north, the Murray Valley Highway doesn’t. If hopping between the major towns on the Murray River, most notably Albury and Echuca, Tocumwal gets missed out.
Best things to do in Tocumwal, NSW: Murray River beaches
It’s a perfectly pleasant place. Tocumwal is a reasonably attractive country town with lots of green space by Australia’s longest river. It also has a series of river beaches that you can spend a few hours at. Take your pick from Dead River Beach, Tocumwal Beach, Finley Beach and Mulberry Beach.
Tocumwal’s strength is the national parks and river islands nearby. Of these, Ulupna Island is easiest to reach. Ulupna Island has its own series of river beaches, but is also a great spot for seeing Australian wildlife. You don’t have to look too hard to find koalas and kangaroos here.
Things to do in Tocumwal, NSW: National Parks
Further west are the Barmah National Park, which has marvellous walking trails through river red gum forest, and the Murray Valley National Park. The latter also has plenty of river red gum forest, but also has excellent birdwatching at the Reed Beds Bird Hide in Mathoura.
The problem is that these best things to do in Tocumwal are better explored from somewhere else. Echuca is a perfectly good base for all three, while the best bits of Murray Valley National Park are closer to Deniliquin or Moira. For Ulupna Island, Strathmerton in Victoria is better placed on the Albury to Echuca drive.
