Kalgoorlie taxi services: Do I need a car in Kalgoorlie, WA?

Kalgoorlie taxi services can help make a visit to Western Australia’s gold-mining city viable without a hire car. Twin City Cabs and Go Gold Taxi are the two providers.

Most people visiting Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, will be driving. Some will be taking a short break, although the drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie is six-and-a-half hours long. Most will be stopping by on the drive across the Nullarbor, heading from Perth to Adelaide, Perth to Sydney or Perth to Melbourne.

However, for those flying from Perth to Kalgoorlie or taking the Prospector Train, there is a decision to make. Do you need to hire a car in Kalgoorlie, or can you get around with a combination of public transport, taxis and tours?

Kalgoorlie taxi firms: Twin City Cabs and Go Gold Taxi

If the latter, there are two Kalgoorlie taxi firms to be aware of. Twin City Cabs is the largest Kalgoorlie taxi service, and offers airport transfers, maxi taxis and wheelchair-accessible vehicles. To book a Twin City Cabs taxi in Kalgoorlie, call (08) 9021 2177 or 131 008.

The other Kalgoorlie taxi option is Go Gold Taxi. Call (08) 9093 0333 for bookings.

Walkable Kalgoorlie attractions

Kalgoorlie is clearly designed for cars, but a surprising amount of the centre is walkable. Heritage buildings cluster on the main street, Hannan Street, and top attraction the Museum of the Goldfields is at the north-western end of Hannan Street.

Providing you’ve sensibly picked a centrally-located hotel, you’re not going to need a taxi here.

Where a Kalgoorlie taxi might be useful

For other Kalgoorlie attractions, you’ll probably need a taxi if you’re not self-driving. These include the Superpit Lookout and the Hannans North Tourist Mine. There are TransGoldfields bus services available, but none of the Kalgoorlie bus routes go near these particular attractions.

The best activity in Kalgoorlie is the Superpit tour, which takes you into the massive open cut gold mine. These tours are run by Kalgoorlie Tours and Charters, with the start point at the company base on Hannan Street. Again, if you’re staying centrally, there’s no need to take a Kalgoorlie taxi to get there.
