Australia’s Grand Canyon in the Grampians, Victoria
Australia’s Grand Canyon in the Grampians National Park makes for a short, steep and – most importantly – fun walk near Halls Gap.
Where is Australia’s Grand Canyon?
Australia’s Grand Canyon is in the Grampians National Park, Victoria. If you’re expecting anything like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, you’re going to be disappointed, however.
The Grand Canyon in the Grampians isn’t to anything like the same scale. However, it still provides towering rock walls and is a cool place to go walking.

- Private Grampians tour – pick which sights you want to include.
- Small group hiking tour – with three hiking trails.
Grand Canyon walk
The Grand Canyon is a popular attraction on several walking routes in the Wonderland Range near Halls Gap. The shortest walk is a 0.9km circuit from the Wonderland car park.
It may be short, but it’s not simple. The Grand Canyon walk in the Grampians is steep, and involves considerable amounts of rock-hopping.
It’s worth tackling for the sense of clambering through the gorge, however. There’s also a good chance of seeing wildflowers and wallabies.
Grand Canyon on the Pinnacle walk
You can also include the Grand Canyon on the longer Pinnacle Walk, which finishes at the Pinnacle Lookout. This 4km return hike starts at the Wonderland car park, passing through the Grand Canyon on the way up. It also goes through the Silent Street – another, narrower gorge – before reaching the Pinnacle.
From the lookout you can see Lake Bellfield and the Mount William Range.
Other attractions in the Grampians include the Boroka Lookout, Silverband Falls, the Balconies and Mackenzie Falls.
Halls Gap accommodation options include the kid-friendly NRMA Holiday Park, the green-credentialled Gariwerd Motel and the surprisingly cool Grampians Eco YHA, which has kangaroos on the lawns.
