Pinnacle Lookout, Grampians: Three walking trails to try

There are three walking trails to the Pinnacle Lookout in the Grampians, Victoria. Choose to set off from the Sundial Car Park, Wonderland Car Park or Halls Gap.

The Pinnacle Lookout near Halls Gap, Victoria, offers some of the best views out over the Grampians. The panorama from the top of this jagged, protruding lookout includes Lake Bellfield and the Mount William Range.

The easiest way to visit is on a Grampians hiking day tour from Melbourne.

The Pinnacle walk is one of the most popular walks in the Grampians region, too – although there’s actually more than one of them.

Pinnacle Lookout from the Sundial Car Park

The simplest take on the Pinnacle walk in the Grampians departs from the Sundial Car Park. It’s a 2.1km trail, and should take around two hours for the return trip. There are some water crossings, and there’s some rock-hopping involved, but this is considered a moderately difficult walk.

More to the point, the Pinnacle walk from the Sundial Car Park is good fun – children tend to enjoy the sense of adventure without being too daunted by it.

Pinnacle Lookout from the Wonderland Car Park

The second way to get to the Pinnacle is the walk from the Wonderland Car Park. This walk is about the same length – 2.1km again – but it’s a much steeper ascent. This route passes through the Grand Canyon, then continues through the Silent Street – a narrow path through a steep, rocky gorge – on the way to the Pinnacle Lookout.

Pinnacle walk from Halls Gap

The third version of the Pinnacle walk departs from the rear of the Halls Gap Caravan Park, and is recommended only for fit and experienced walkers. There’s a well-maintained track to Venus Baths, but from then on it gets rocky, continuing to Splitters Falls and the Wonderland car park.

From there, you continue through the Grand Canyon and Silent Street to the Pinnacle Lookout.

Leaving from Halls Gap, the Pinnacle walk is 9.6km long. Budget about five hours to go there and back.

Whichever route you take, keep an eye out for the wildlife that the Grampians is famous for. There’s a very good chance of seeing kangaroos and wallabies along the way, while echidnas are also seen here.

Other attractions in the Grampians include the Boroka Lookout, Silverband Falls, the Balconies and Mackenzie Falls.

Halls Gap accommodation options include the kid-friendly NRMA Holiday Park, the green-credentialled Gariwerd Motel and the surprisingly cool Grampians Eco YHA, which has kangaroos on the lawns.
