Is Cave Beach the best beach in Jervis Bay?

Is Cave Beach the best beach in Jervis Bay?

If you prefer surfing to swimming, Cave Beach might just be the best beach in Jervis Bay. Along with the surf breaks and white sand, there’s also the cave and the kangaroos.

Cave Beach, Jervis Bay, is absolutely spectacular. It’d take a heart of flint to suggest otherwise. In fact, there’s a strong argument for saying that Cave Beach is the best beach in Jervis Bay.

Before you can make that judgement, however, you have to get there. And that involves leaving New South Wales for the Jervis Bay Territory.

Where is Cave Beach?

Cave Beach is part of the Booderee National Park, which makes up most of the Jervis Bay Territory. It’s on the southern side of the Territory, at the end of the Cave Beach Road.

The Cave Beach car park is on the clifftop, and you need to walk to the beach itself. There’s a choice of heading down the 1.2km Cave Beach Access Track or taking the slightly shorter route through the Cave Beach Campground.

Kangaroos at Cave Beach, Jervis Bay

Either way, you’ve got a good chance of seeing kangaroos en route. They like hanging out here.

The beach gets its name from the tall, rocky cave at the western end. Visitors can venture inside the Cave Beach cave, as the sandy floor slowly gives way to rock and sunshine to the dark. Kids will love scrambling over the nearby rocks, too.

Surfing at Cave Beach, Jervis Bay

The beach itself is just under a kilometre long, and is made up of the white sand that Jervis Bay is famous for. However, it is not on the bay itself, which means that the usual calm swimming conditions are traded in for often grandiose surf.

The best Cave Beach surf breaks are generally about 200 metres off the shore, near the rocks at the western side of the beach.
