Whisky Bay, Wilsons Promontory: Getting there, walk & swimming

One of the most picturesque beaches on Wilsons Promontory, Victoria, Whisky Bay is a short walk from the car park. It’s not a safe beach for swimming, however.

Whisky Bay, Wilsons Promontory, is one of several highly appealing beaches near the southernmost point of Victoria.

Some visitors prefer Norman Beach in Tidal River or Squeaky Beach and Fairy Cove little further north. But Whisky Bay has plenty to offer, too.

Where is Whisky Bay?

Whisky Bay is on the western short of Wilsons Promontory, a little to the north of Squeaky Beach. On the Wilsons Promontory Road towards Tidal River, the Whisky Bay car park is just before you reach the Norman Lookout and Glennie Lookout.

Whisky Bay walk

From the Whisky Bay car park, it’s an easy 400 metre walk to Whisky Bay beach. The walk starts out along the creek lane then heads over the bay to the beach, which is photogenically flanked by big granite boulders.

The walk is rated as Grade 2, meaning it’s relatively easy for most people. It’s an even shorter walk to the lookout, which is more or less next to the car park.

Is it safe to swim at Whisky Bay?

Whisky Bay is relatively sheltered, but there are strong rips, and swimming is not advised. Surfers sometimes get lucky here, but it’s not a classic surf beach – more a picturesque cove. There are no lifeguard patrols at Whisky Bay, either.

Other things to do at Wilsons Promontory include wildlife spotting on the walking tracks and taking a wilderness cruise to Skull Rock.
