Melbourne to Port Augusta road trip: Drive distance, time & stops

Melbourne to Port Augusta: Ballarat and the Grampians

The Melbourne to Adelaide leg of the drive starts along the Western Highway. You can divert to Lerderderg State Park, but Ballarat is the first major stop. This Goldfields city’s highlight is giant open air museum Sovereign Hill, but former Olympics venue Lake Wendouree is worth a look too. It’s also possible to stop at the bizarre knight-themed Kryal Castle on the drive from Melbourne to Ballarat.

After Ballarat, you’ll pass through Beaufort and near Lake Fyans. But if you’ve built extra time into the itinerary, the Grampians region is arguably the best stop on the Melbourne to Port Augusta road trip. Stay in wildlife-packed Halls Gap, then build in bushwalks around visits to the Boroka Lookout, Lake Bellfield and Mackenzie Falls. The Melbourne to Halls Gap drive takes just under three hours.
