Mossy Point, NSW: What are the best things to do?

Mossy Point on the New South Wales South Coast hosts stingrays that hang around the Region X Boatshed. Go see them by kayaking on the Tomaga River.

Mossy Point is a massively underrated coastal village on the Tomaga River in New South Wales. Just to the south of Batemans Bay on the NSW South Coast, Mossy Point is easily reachable on the Batemans Bay to Narooma drive. The settlement is surrounded by beach hangouts. But Mossy Point’s focus is on the river.

Things to do in Mossy Point, NSW: Mossy Point Lookout

What passes for action in this sleepy part of the world centres around the jetty and boat ramp on the Tomaga River. It’s a very popular fishing spot, while the Mossy Point Lookout just to the east offers marvellous views over the coastline. From here, you can peer into neighbouring Tomakin and Broulee.

Nice though the walk is, the best action to be had in Mossy Point is on the river. The river mouth is hugely popular for fishing, but the Region X Boatshed offers less sedentary things to do in Mossy Point.

Things to do in Mossy Point, NSW: Kayaking on the Tomaga River

The Region X Boatshed offers kayak hire for those who want to explore the Tomaga River. In the shallow waters near the river mouth, you’ve got an excellent chance of seeing stingrays gliding along the bottom. They tend to hang out around the boatshed looking for scraps discarded by fishermen.

There’s plenty of other wildlife to see nearby, too. The local pelicans are ever-present staples.

Leisurely paddling along the Tomaga River is a marvellous way to look for fish and water birds. Kayak rental costs from $30 for one hour. That’s for a single kayak. If you want a double kayak, that’ll cost you $40. You can also hire stand-up paddleboards from the Region X Boatshed, costing from $30 an hour.

If you prefer waves to serene waters, then the Broulee Surf School at neighbouring Broulee Beach should teach you how to ride the swells.
