What is the Noojee Trestle Bridge?
The Noojee Trestle Bridge is a 21 metre high and 102 metre long remnant of the former Noojee to Warragul Railway. It makes for a great photograph, but it’s also worth walking or cycling the 3km Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail.
The Noojee Trestle Bridge is one of the most photogenic sites in West Gippsland. The wooden bridge is 102 metres long and 21 metres high, with the current incarnation dating back to 1939.
The original Noojee Trestle Bridge was built in 1919 as part of a former railway running from Noojee to Warragul. The bridge burned down, but was rebuilt in the same style. It’s now the tallest wooden trestle bridge still standing in Victoria.
Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail
Part of the appeal is in the setting. The bridge is surrounded by ferns and eucalypt forest. But there’s also a short rail trail here. A section of the Noojee to Warragul railway has been turned into a walking and cycling trail.
The Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail is three kilometres long (or six kilometres return) along a track that alternates between dirt and gravel. It’s pretty easy-going, with the slopes very gentle. No special levels of fitness are required to enjoy the walk along the old railway line through the forest.
More information about the Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail can be found at the Visit Baw Baw website.
There’s a car park near the bridge for anyone wishing to take the trail on. The turn off from the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road is about 1.5km from the Victorian town of Noojee.
