6 Head, The Rocks: What’s so good about this Sydney steak restaurant?

Sydney steak restaurant 6 Head has a prime location in the Rocks, an expensive menu and a cool backstory.

6 Head in Sydney is one of the most spectacular steak restaurants in Australia. A large part of the appeal is down to the setting.

This Sydney steak restaurant is in the historic Rocks district. More to the point, it’s in a sandstone, convict-era warehouse near the water’s edge. The building is hugely atmospheric, with plenty of original features kept intact. The outdoor terrace offers pure Sydney glamour, however, staring out towards the Sydney Opera House.

6 Head menu

But the rest of 6 Head’s appeal comes down to the food. This Rocks restaurant takes its steak very seriously indeed.

The menu is a stickler for detail on how long each cut has been age, where it has been sourced from and its marble count.

Rocks steak restaurant: Wagyu prices

Such a location and dedication to detail doesn’t come cheap, however. You’re looking at paying $69 for a 300g fillet steak, and even more for the wagyu steaks 6 Head specialises in.

If you’re wanting a cheap feed, this Rocks restaurant is not the place for it.

Where does the name 6 Head come from?

There’s a good story behind the unusual name, however. When the First Fleet arrived in Australia back in 1788, there were two bulls and four cows on board – six head of cattle.

Very soon after arrival, the cattle went missing. Eight years later, a group of more than 100 cows and bulls was spotted about 130km inland from Sydney – all thought to be descendants of the missing six.

Governor Hunter called the area where the cattle was found ‘the Pastures’. And the discovery was seen as a sign that a cattle industry could flourish in Australia. Which, of course, it has done since.
