Millbrook Winery, Western Australia: Can I go wine-tasting in Jarrahdale?

The Millbrook Winery in Western Australia shows off unusual varietals grown elsewhere in the state. This Jarrahdale winery is a good place to go wine-tasting in the Perth Hills.

Western Australia’s capital, Perth, is blessed with a wine region right on its doorstep. The Swan Valley, particularly around Henley Brook, is crammed full of wineries.

But if you go a little further south, there is also a smattering of wineries in the Perth Hills. And the Millbrook Winery in Jarrahdale is a fine example.

Millbrook Winery in Jarrahdale

Jarrahdale is a popular country escape from Perth, on the edge of the Serpentine National Park. There are several good walking trails nearby, but the Millbrook Winery offers the chance to indulge after the muddy boots have retired for the day.

The Millbrook Winery is on a farm amongst the soaring jarrah forests. It is part of the Fogarty Wine Group, which runs several wineries across Australia. There are 20 acres on site, and the vines planted there focus on shiraz and viognier grapes. To make the other wines, Millbrook sources fruit from elsewhere in Western Australia.

Unusual varietals at Millbrook Winery

The Millbrook wines divide into the estate range and regional range. The estate range, perhaps predictably, focuses on the grapes grown on-site. The regional range is perhaps more interesting, however, as it showcases lesser-known varietals better grown in different parts of Western Australia.

You can try a verdejo, a vermentino and an arneis – all of which are pretty unusual to find in Australia.

If you want to go wine-tasting in the Perth Hills, the Millbrook Winery tasting room offers free tastings. There are delightful views out over the lake and gardens, while there’s plenty of art on display too. The tasting room is open from 10am to 5pm, Thursday to Monday.

Millbrook in Jarrahdale is also home to a pretty good restaurant, although on a sunny day, the more charming option is to buy one of the $45 picnic baskets and enjoy a leisurely al fresco feast out on the lawns.
