Brisbane to Adelaide road trip: Drive distance, hours & best stops

Brisbane to Adelaide drive: Adelaide Hills

The final section of the journey from Tailem Bend to Adelaide passes through some of the most pleasant stretches of South Australia.

Murray Bridge is just upstream from Tailem Bend, and is arguably South Australia’s best Murray River town. The Captain’s Cottage Museum does local history, Kinchina Conservation Park brims with wildflowers and Captain Proud Paddle Boat Cruises runs paddlesteamer tours along the Murray. You can stay overnight at the relatively new and swanky Bridgeport Hotel or the budget-friendly Murray Bridge Tourist Park.

Just outside of town, the Monarto Zoo offers safari-style animal viewing.

Then, it’s into Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills wine region. Hopping between cellar doors is obviously the top activity here, but some go above and beyond.

At the Lane Vineyard you can do food-matched pairing sessions or make your own wine blend. Lot 100 brings several food and drink-makers together in one place. And the Howard Vineyard offers an excellent restaurant in a converted barn.

Heavily German-influenced Hahndorf is the best place to stay the night – and the Hahndorf Inn will serve up a big German feast.

Suggested Hahndorf attractions: Hahndorf Farm Barn, Wolf Blass Gallery and Museum, German Migration Museum at the Hahndorf Academy, Hans Heysen’s The Cedars.

Hahndorf accommodation picks: For style, Manna by Haus. For functionality, the Hahndorf Motel.
